Research and Production Facilities 

As the Department of Architecture, we actively utilize the Model Workshop, the Computer-Aided Research and Design (BOAT) laboratories, and the Building Physics and Alaattin Yener Building Products Center (AYYÜM) applied laboratories in our educational programs.

 

MODELING WORKSHOP

 

BOAT - GIS

The Computer-Aided Research and Design and Geographic Information Systems Laboratory was established in 1987. The laboratory was established to demonstrate to undergraduate and graduate students in the two departments within the Faculty of Architecture how they can utilize information technologies in their respective professional fields and to provide education in this area. In addition to educational activities, the laboratory also conducts research and development projects focused on the use of information technologies in the disciplines of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning. With its hardware capacity, which has been developed and updated since its establishment, the BOAT-CBS Laboratory plays a significant role in the educational process of the Faculty of Architecture.

To open up the passageway of the fire escape located on the top floor of our faculty and ensure safe evacuation in emergencies, the Computer Laboratory situated in the fire escape passageway was demolished and reorganized into two separate computer laboratories on the left and right sides, and named the “Prof. Dr. Emre AYSU BOAT-CBS Laboratory.”

 

BUILDING PHYSICS 

Since the 1978 academic year, the Building Physics Laboratory has played a key role in graduate education at the Faculty of Architecture, particularly in the fields of Lighting and Color, Heat and Humidity, and Acoustics, has played a major role in measurement, experimentation, and research. In recent years, the Building Physics Laboratory has been upgraded with new measuring instruments, thereby acquiring a structure capable of facilitating much more detailed research. In addition, the laboratory is now better positioned to serve requests from private and public institutions outside the university.

 

ALAETTİN YENER BUILDING PRODUCTS CENTER (AYYÜM)

The Building Products Center was established to provide practical support for the relevant foundational professional courses and design courses (architectural design, building components, building materials, plumbing, etc.) and to provide knowledge transfer on technical issues related to products that are constantly evolving in line with modern technologies (production, application, etc.).
   At the
Alaettin Yener Building Products Center, an environment has been created where students can establish a direct connection with building products and continuously review their accumulated knowledge; in line with this objective, a Knowledge Bank, a Micro-Experiment Laboratory (MDL), classrooms, and a Product Pool have been established. Work is ongoing to transform the catalog service for products manufactured in Turkey and imported from abroad into a practical information bank via computer, subject to necessary restrictions.

The Knowledge Bank includes equipment and documents such as DVD players, VCD players, videos, videotapes, VCDs, slides, brochures, etc. In addition, a small-scale research library is being developed.

The Micro-Experiment Laboratory is a facility where small-scale experiments—such as moisture measurement and water absorption—can be conducted. Student participation is encouraged in these experiments.

Product Gallery: This section showcases construction-related products and application models for undergraduate and graduate students. The construction products in our permanent exhibitions at the Product Showcase are presented to students through visual displays within the framework of “University-Industry Collaboration,” ensuring that students acquire lasting knowledge during their educational process.

Manufacturers wishing to introduce their products to architects pursuing master’s degrees and to our students—the architects of the future—can showcase the construction products they manufacture, along with application models, at the booths that make up our Product Pool.

In the classroom located within our Product Center, there is a projection-equipped learning space for our undergraduate and graduate students. The classroom is used both for regular classes and for various seminars.

 

MODEL WORKSHOP

Opened in 2013, the Model Workshop is available not only to students and faculty but also to users from outside the university. In addition to woodworking, metalworking, and painting workshops, the Model Workshop is equipped with professional tools such as CNC and laser cutters. The Model Workshop also features a pool specifically designed for ship modeling projects.  

 

Bedi KORUN Academic Hall

Tunç KORUN, the architect responsible for transforming Room D-416 on the top floor of the Faculty of Architecture into an academic lounge, Figen KORUN, and Özden KORUN—who were instrumental in transforming Room D-416 on the top floor of the Faculty of Architecture into an academic lounge—have designated it as a workspace for our faculty members and teaching assistants, naming it the “Bedi KORUN Academic Lounge.”
