BUILDING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Building Science and Technology includes, determining the required features in a construction according to natural and built environmental factors, research possibilities on construction technology and building materials, formatting buildings and built environments according to various human behavior. Today what is expected from construction as the product of architecture is to compose an interior space with consistent and rational production. Within the process of this composition, the provisions regarding the requirements such as construction methods and technology, equipment selection, detailing and providing the appropriate measures for the physical environmental conditions are covered by the building science unit. These issues are divided into specialization fields as:

- Structural systems

- Building elements and materials

- Building physics

- Building production

The skills and knowledge regarding these specialization fields are being provided in detailed form in architectural undergraduate and graduate education. The aims of these specialization fields within the building science and technology unit are as follows:

Structural Systems

It’s aimed to educate, within the architectural education that governs the design and application project of a construction, architecture candidates, who have knowledge about regulations and theories about the structural system of a construction, who can produce systematic solutions on traditional and modern construction techniques and who give attention on ethical rules in design and research.

Building Elements and Materials

It’s aimed to help the students gain the skills of determining an architectural problem, collecting, merging, evaluating and developing the necessary information, thinking three dimensionally, reading the existing built environment with its different layers as a physical-social space, researching a settlement pattern in context of morphological relaitons, solutions for limited technological problems, building up the construction product (materials, parts, components, elements) and the construction within the design process and creating the regarding design decision and principles.

Building physics

Today architectural design provides beside appropriate settlements and compatible interior spaces, the required layouts for physical environments within these spaces. The aim of specialization on building physics is to help the student gain the skills and knowledge about creating the architectural environment which meets visuals, auditory and thermal comfort requirements regarding the physical environment factors (light, color, heat, sound etc.).

Building Production

It’s aimed to educate architecture candidates for meeting the demand for the growing housing and/or construction needs and the increasingly complex requirements. The unit helps the students gaining the skills and knowledge about providing the professional structuring.

Among the graduate education in YTU Institute of Science and Technology, the following programs are available;

- Building Science Masters and PhD programs

- Housing Production and Construction Management Masters and PhD programs

- Building Physics Masters and Phd programs

- Building Physics Masters Non-Thesis Program

Beside educational activities the academic members of the unit are playing an important role on a number of ongoing and completed scientific studies in national and international levels.
